The Winter Automotive Emergency Course was developed by Colin Frey for the RCMP and their Auxiliary & Maintenance staff, who fix and maintain vital components, and who may get called out to remote locations in any weather and at any time. Colin has also delivered the course to Saskatchewan Environment employees & others who routinely find themselves in remote locations in the winter months. David has helped Colin deliver this course previously, and they are proud to to now bring it to the public.
Saskatchewan is a very rural province, and winter can turn a farm's driveway into a remote location. Snowmobiling, ice fishing, and ATV'ing are also popular here in the winter and often takes us into remote locations.
Experience is often the best teacher, however, it is stressful and dangerous to gain experience in emergency situations on your own. This course is set up to not only give you the knowledge to deal with an automotive emergency in the winter, but you will also have the opportunity to apply what you've learned and gain real world experience by simulating a winter automotive emergency in a controlled setting.
You will have the opportunity to spend one night in your vehicle, (using whatever means you have packed with you), to simulate a remote, winter breakdown and having to spend the night in your automobile. You will also have the opportunity to use the lessons you've learned and whatever leverage from your vehicle to make a shelter and spend the winter night in it, simulating a roll-over and loss of the vehicle, as a shelter option.
This course is challenge-by-choice, meaning you are not required to spend the nights outside (but will still learn how-to). Modes of Adventure has a heated classroom which you can sleep in if so desired. However, the more you challenge yourself, the more you will get out of the course.
